On Sept 27th 2024, Poetic Recovery will present “Cultural Healing” featuring keynote speaker, world famous Dj Johnny Juice, who is not only an iconic Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and member of the iconic Hip Hop group Public Enemy, he also works a full time job. Dj Johnny Juice’s Full Time employment and global fame allow us to speak to youth and their parents about the responsibility we have to our communities and ourselves with being an accomplished artist, and this can be done while being gainfully employed and without  nefarious, destructive, abusive behaviors to one self and community.

One of the greatest results of the exploitation and appropriation of Hip Hop culture is the increase of murder, abuse to women, and self destructive behavior in all our communities, especially Black and Brown communities. As a result, too many youth today want to be famous rap artists, thinking that  being an artist will make them rich and that  the way to get there is joining a gang, selling drugs, and disrespecting women. Part of my work as the founder of Poetic Recovery has been to change that narrative. While other youth struggle to find positive outlets, of which there are few, I have worked with both populations of youth to help maximize positive impact on their lives, our communities, and the world through cultural education and opportunities. With your support, we can expand that work to re-educate and increase opportunities, and I have the network of over 600 individuals and organizations to get it done. While this will not be our first Cultural/Hip Hop community conference, this one comes with the once in a lifetime opportunity to access cultural projects with world famous artists to help bring positive attention to local artists in their youth, recovery, and older age with positive messages. With your support, these projects will be a great success.

Approximately 20 years ago, I founded this Alcohol and drug free open mic I called Poetic Recovery to be an aide for those like myself in recovery from alcoholism, addiction and trauma from the foster system due to various levels of abuse.  This open mic has led to the development of artists with performances that encourage peace, education, healing, and recovery while developing a compassionate and healthy community. In that time, I was the North East Regional Director of Hip Hop Congress, worked with national social and human  rights organizations, performed on stage for Wyclef James at Amherst College, Performed for Pete Seegar and Bernice Johnson Reagon (Founder of world famous Sweet Honey on the rock) at Marlboro College in Ct. Under my leadership, Poetic Recovery has grown from our open mics, events, and workshops to a national network with a virtual Cultural Exchange social media website that has over 600 organizations and members (www.poeticrecovery.us) and an online radio station to support the artists (www.poeticrecoveryradio.com). We are currently getting some of the work done, and with your support, we will do even more.
